Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many Americans started noticing their loved ones getting wrapped up in conspiracy theories and growing distant from their communities. Perhaps a friend or a family member started posting fringe theories on social media, or a co-worker started mentioning extreme beliefs around the water cooler. Rather than speak up and potentially put the relationship at further risk, people felt disempowered to confront these ideas.
The current status quo for combatting targeted violence is focused heavily on confronting the most extreme and violent manifestations of these pathways to radicalization. Simply put, it has not been built to equip individual community members to intervene early, before these pathways become violent.
That's why we built Project Gravity. We are a team of individuals that care about empowering individuals to start conversations that help their loved ones choose community over conspiracy.
As the world grapples with the challenges posed by the rapid spread of conspiracy networks, Project Gravity was founded by a dedicated group of multi-disciplinary students from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in September 2023. Our mission? To empower you to start those thorny conversations equipped with knowledge, tools, and confidence.
